Short Description: Built in 1958 and considered one of the best mid-century modern houses in NC, the Carr House was sold to Mark Hansen and Mimi Lukens in 2012.  To recieve significant tax credits the house was registered on the National Historic Register.  All additions and renovations required approval both state and national.   The addition was for 2 bedrooms, a 36 ‘ long linear office/studio cantilevered to the North and a bridge connecting old and new.. Extensive interior renovations were planned for the existing.  Of great importance was the marriage of the existing house and the addition.

Architect’s Statement: The addition to the Carr House was intended to both complement and expand the existing House.  The desire was to provide something new and also something that was respectful of the existing house.  An extremely tight budget required the existing house to be registered of the National Historic Register.  Extensive interior renovations include a new kitchne, family room and remodeled bedrooms.  All changes required approval.  The addition was by a bridge requiring minimial changes to the eixsting house.  While the addition was never intending to mimic the original house, compatible materials, details and massing tend to relate the old and the new.  The house and addition was completed for $150.00 per square foot and included landscaping. One of the features of the original house was the entry courtyard, terrace and living room deck. Because of the quality and quantity of the exterior the addition has minimal exxterior spaces but the landscape was extensive.

Type of Construction: The addition is steel frame and wood frame.  The addition expresses brick, metal and glass in porpotions relateed to the original house.
