Short Description: The Brinegar House is sited on the golf course in Durham’s historic Hope Valley neighborhood. The design respects its context and also reflects our client’s vision for a modern house with space to enjoy their art and the outdoors, and room to entertain. A landscaped entry court framed by masonry site walls provide privacy and a layered entry experience. A gallery spans the length of the south entrance and provides circulation through the house. The primary open-plan, high volume living space extends directly onto the terrace. Amenities include an indoor/outdoor fireplace, a lap pool and outdoor shower.
Architect’s Statement: This 4,000-square-foot house is designed to accomodate our client’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle and provide them with room to entertain, studio space, and gallery walls to display their art. The design respects the fabric of the Hope Valley neighborhood by matching the scale and facade line of its neighbors, and utilizing a painted brick common to nearby historic homes. An entry court with a fountain feature flows into a dramatic entry gallery which spans the length of the south facade, displaying our client’s art collection and providing circulation throughout the house. The office sits adjacent to the entry court and offers views to the fountain feature as well as the walled side yard on the opposite side. The gallery wraps through the office and leads to two bedrooms and a shared bath. At the other end of the gallery, our client’s daylight-filled studio enjoys direct access to the terrace and to a mudroom/washup sink area. The open, kitchen, dining and living space offers a panoramic view of the terrace and golf course beyond. A full pantry supports the kitchen and offers flexibility for entertaining. The master suite can be accessed by the gallery or the living space, and offers direct access to the terrace as well as the walled side yard. The terrace features a lap pool, outdoor fireplace, fire bowl, and both seating and dining areas for enjoying the outdoors.
