Architect: Perkins+Will
Project Location: Raleigh, NC
Project Completion Date: 201
Short Description: The Gregg Museum of Art and Design showcases NC State University’s rich collection of art and design objects, bringing together in one location the extensive Gregg Museum collection with the university’s 1928 Georgian style Chancellor’s Residence. The new museum includes a 16,700 sf addition to a fully renovated, 8,400 sf historic residence along with renovation of historic gardens. Inspired by patchwork-style quilting patterns represented within the museum’s collection, the design is conceived as a collection of interior and exterior galleries stitched together through spatial connections.
Architect’s Statement: The two-story addition to this historic residence includes programs dedicated to the exhibition and preservation of the museum collection. The main level features a gracious lobby and reception overlooking the gardens as well as galleries and exhibit prep areas. The lower level features a seminar room embedded in the conservation and collection storage spaces. The existing historic home is used for instruction, special collections and museum administration offices. Together, the Gregg Museum and the renovated Chancellor’s Residence provide a major, new gateway to the NC State campus and a cultural bridge between the University and the greater arts community. The design allows the site and historic residence to tell their story and by extension, the story of each component of the collection. Inspired by patchwork quilting patterns represented in the museum’s collection, the design was conceived as a collection of galleries stitched together through spatial connections. Inside and out, the site, house, and addition are a collage of galleries of various sizes, heights, and degrees of enclosure. Spatial connections from gallery to gallery are key to the experience of the museum and provide a fresh interpretation of the historic relationship between Georgian style homes and their garden setting. Long considered a hidden jewel at NC State, the re-envisioned Gregg Museum of Art and Design will now be open and accessible to everyone on campus and beyond, serving the community as a hub for art, discovery, and learning.
Type of Construction: The two-story + one-basement building is Type II-B construction with steel framing. The exterior enclosure systems are: 1) brick veneer with metal stud back-up plus insulation; 2) Atlantic white cedar rain screen cladding with metal stud back-up plus insulation; 3) composite metal wall panels with metal stud back-up plus insulation, and 4) aluminum curtain wall with 1” insulated glazing system.
