Architect: Stitch Design Shop
Project Location: Clemens, NC
Project Completion Date: May, 2016

Short Description: Sited on an acre of agricultural zoned land, and adjacent to a suburban golf course community, the Hole One Residence is positioned on a south facing sloped lot. With its passive solar design, and 20’ x 64’ footprint, the home nestles itself amongst the hardwoods and topography to achieve maximum energy efficiencies and views. Commissioned for a family with two children, the home was designed to serve as an educational tool for the kids, and was the lifelong vision of the parents to live in a modern home. Built for $85 per square foot, it was a labor of love.

Architect’s Statement: As the designer, the homeowner and the part-time contractor, the home was a labor of love. Built for just under $85 per square foot the program was an ever-evolving design problem, as are many residential projects, but even more so considering the relationship. The solution was a manifestation that came out of experiencing the site and its context when the property was vacant. The materials on the exterior of the home would be borrowed from a nearby old farmhouse, but rather looked at how its materials could be applied in a more modern aesthetic.  Those materials borrowed from the farmhouse were; white bevel siding, stone and standing seam metal. In the end, it would be the designer’s own personal wish to create a modern forward thinking home for his children to grow up in, that drove the inspiration and insanity. After all you can’t preach it, if you don’t practice it… The architect wanted his kids to know that it was ok to be a little different, and that you can think outside the box while comfortably living within it.
