The American Institute of Architects North Carolina Chapter (AIANC) is proud to announce that the Kamphoefner Award was been awarded to Robert (Bob) Thomas, AIA.
The Kamphoefner Prize was established by former NC State School of Design Dean Henry Kamphoefner to recognize architects and firms that demonstrate a consistent integrity and devotion to furthering the development of the modern movement in architecture.
With over 18 years of experience, Thomas’s strength is in the creation, analysis and adaption of conceptual ideas to built form, with a genuine commitment to the realities of budget, schedule and construction technology. With a joint graduate concentration in both architecture + landscape, Bob is a strong advocate of clear, idea driven, work, with an emphasis on the full integration of building technology and landscape architecture.
Bob has served as a lead designer and architect on projects of a wide range of proportions, classifications, and budgets that have been consistently recognized for Design Excellence, with over 28 Design Awards from the American Institute of Architects and the International Interior Design Association in just the past 9 years.
In addition to serving as the Principal and Director of Design at VINES Architecture, Bob also holds a regular appointment as Professor in Practice at the North Carolina State University College of Design. There he teaches advanced architectural design studios at the graduate level.
“Bob changed the way I thought about architecture in many way and he inspired me to see it for what it could be versus what it has been. So as an educator, that was my greatest experience in grad school” said Courtney Evans, AIA.
“He has contributed beautiful buildings that are done with great care and passion. Bob is also important to architecture because he has mentored several young architects and interns and he has taught at the school as a professor in practice is admired by the students and the faculty in the School of Design. He in fact carries on the tradition that Henry Kamphoefner started” said Roger Clark, FAIA.
